What Is Islam Nusantara.? And How is the Concept

The term “Islam Nusantara” could be regarded as a concept which is “empirical, distinctive, contextualised, indigenous, vernacularized with social reality, culture, and literature in Indonesia”, according to a report in the Nadhatul Ulama’s website. And it appears as if that the term signifies a new movement towards understanding Islam within the socio-cultural context of Indonesia.

The term Islam Nusantara first arose on the 33rd NU Major Conference. Arguably, such concept could be the ideal concept of Islam in Indonesia, one without violence and the one which accommodate local cultures.

Some also view this as a differentiation point between Islam Nusantara and that of Islam in Arab countries, which is often associated with conflicts and civil war among the Muslim themselves. Hence it could arguably be said that Islam Nusantara is a representative colour of Islam in Indonesia.

Regarding its formal definition, it seems that there is no conclusive definition for the term Islam Nusantara. However, interestingly, it seems that people already grasp the characteristics, without the need of having a formal definition.

Nevertheless, the term is now undergoing several tests. There are many who are sceptical on the subject and thought that Islam Nusantara is another concept which is not available within the body of Islamic teaching.

Furthermore, Hizbut Tahrir stated that it is not fair to compare Indonesia with the Middle East, as reported by the BBC. Another challenge arises when positioning the Islam Nusantara concept in certain issues. For instance, could it provide solution in dealing with issues such as the Shiites and Ahmadi differences in Indonesia? A failure to provide solutions would render the Islam Nusantara concept as anything but an empty subject, argued Azis Anwar Fachrudin as published by the Jakarta Post.

The pros and cons of Islam Nusantara is understandable as the concept is still new and needs further refinements. Besides, the fact that Indonesia is a plural country makes it challenging to accept it for the first time.

For the world, such concept could be made a role model to provide solutions in places frequented with religious violence, such as what we could see on the middle east at the moment. It is hoped that Islam Nusantara could be an Oasis in this chaotic world.
